Meet Malik Kashif

We sat down to speak with the Towson University graduate in Information Technology. He shares about his journey, graduating in an impressive 2 years, balancing schoolwork with outside commitments, and his undeniable drive to learn…

School days for Malik were long, commuting over 2 hours to his classes at Towson University and home to Bowie, Maryland, each day. During his final semesters, Malik worked a 9-to-5 job three days a week, on top of his studies. He often spent his weekends catching up on coursework because his weekdays were so "drained and stressed". Despite being stretched thin, Malik maintained his momentum, even taking summer classes to accelerate his graduation. His story is one of perseverance and drive. Motivated by his deep-rooted optimism for the future and the people around him.

Malik’s journey with CFK began after a recommendation from his mother, whom he described to us as the "biggest driving force" in his life. She shared the link to the scholarship, and Malik immediately felt a connection to the organization. Unlike the often-tedious nature of scholarship applications, Malik found the questions fun and engaging to answer. This initial enthusiasm carried over into his interview with Marty and other Board members, which he described as a friendly and authentic conversation. As he explained it, "They liked my story, and I liked theirs."

Malik says the CFK Foundation brought him a broader perspective. He emphasizes how much he enjoyed the cohort meetings hosted by the foundation, which allowed him to connect with people outside his usual circles. To him, hearing about other scholars' majors, plans, and personal struggles was "the most wonderful thing in the world". These interactions reinforced his belief that "everyone has a lesson to teach you". A philosophy he extends to his everyday life, where he strives to be a positive presence, whether it be by holding doors for others or simply being a courteous driver.

Now that he’s graduated, Malik is not slowing down. While currently working in a warehouse, he is leveraging connections there to transition into IT work while simultaneously studying for several web certifications. He shared that he aims to complete a Google Data Analytics certification, A+, Security+, and Network+ certifications within the next year and a half.

When asked what advice he would give to prospective CFK applicants, Malik emphasizes authenticity. He believes that being one’s true self is the key to success. "You are your biggest asset," he says. He encourages others to believe in themselves and be the most genuine version of themselves. For Malik, the scholarship was not just financial help; it brought him a community that embraced his story and supported his ambition. We are so proud of Malik’s achievements so far and know that his passion will not end here. We will continue to support him and his ambitions, and look forward to seeing how his career unfolds.

Meet Lillie Gilliam, a 21-year-old business student and Colin F. Kennedy Memorial Scholar whose journey reflects initiative, gratitude and a deep commitment to growth…

Before enrolling at the Golisano Institute (GI), Lillie worked full-time at Wegmans as a Pharmacy Technician and Store Trainer. While attending a Wegmans-hosted career fair, she was introduced to the Golisano Institute and reconnected with Jamarr Myers, a trusted former colleague from a youth workforce program that helped her gain employment at the age of 15. Trusting that connection and believing in the opportunity, Lillie applied and made the courageous decision to reduce her work hours to part-time so she could fully invest in her education and long-term future.

Through generous support from the Colin F. Kennedy Foundation, Wegmans and institutional grants, Lillie has been able to pursue her business education at no cost. This financial support has allowed her to focus entirely on academic and professional development without financial barriers. At GI, Lillie transformed from a student with limited experience into a confident business professional. The Golisano Institute helped her navigate one of the most difficult questions a young adult faces: “What should I do with my career?” Through mentorship, experiential learning and hands-on opportunities, she discovered her passion for business development, sales strategy and holistic entrepreneurship.

In Lillie’s words, “the support of the Colin F. Kennedy Foundation represents more than financial assistance—it represents belief.”

Knowing CFKF was a resource, Lillie took the initiative to reach out directly for support because she understood the life-changing impact this opportunity could have on her personal and professional growth. She views this experience not only as an investment in her education but as an investment in her future capacity to positively impact her clients and community. Lillie is deeply grateful for the mentors, employers and organizations who have invested in her journey. She is committed to carrying this opportunity forward by sharing what she learns, uplifting others and continuing to build a career rooted in service, integrity and meaningful impact. Lillie graduated from GI in February 2026, a monumental celebration of her hard work and dedication.

Today, Lillie serves as a Senior Health Insurance Advisor with Maust & Leone in Rochester, NY, where she helps qualified individuals navigate Medicare decisions and secure coverage, protecting both their health and financial well-being. She also interns with holistic business coach Raeanne Lacatena through the Integrated Entrepreneur Academy, where she studies entrepreneurship, personal development and sustainable business growth. These roles allow her to combine business strategy with compassion—supporting both the practical and human sides of decision-making.

We can’t wait to see what is in store for her in the years to come and continue to support her journey. Congratulations Lillie!
